Russia, Brazil open U23 Worlds with show of power

 

Russia celebrate win over Algeria that sees them get on track to defend their FIVB Men's U23 World Championship title.

Cairo, Egypt, August 18, 2017 - Defending champions and hot favourites again this year Russia opened their campaign at the 2017 FIVB Men's U23 World Championship with a convincing show of strength against Algeria, while Brazil, the only other country to win an U23 title, posted the other straight-set win of the day over Algeria as the competition opened here Friday.

Russia thundered past Algeria 4-0 (15-8, 15-11, 15-11, 15-8) in 49 minutes and Brazil destroyed Mexico 4-0 (15-7, 15-8, 15-6, 15-10) in 69 minutes.



Meanwhile, in other Pool A action Poland outlasted Cuba in a very tight game 4-1 (15-12, 12-15, 16-14, 15-10, 17-15) and hosts Egypt staged a great upset in edging Japan 4-3 (15-10, 15-13, 12-15, 15-8, 9-15, 13-15, 15-10).

In Pool B China came back from a set down at 1-2 to edge Turkey 4-3 (19-17, 12-15, 11-15, 15-8, 15-10, 10-15, 15-10) in an hour and 42 minutes and Argentina outclassed Iran 4-2 (16-14, 11-15, 15-11, 18-16, 13-15, 15-10).





The top two teams of each pool advance to the semifinals.

All matches in Cairo are played under a new scoring system currently being tested: a best-of-seven, 15-point set format.

Competition in Cairo continues on Saturday with the second round of pool play, including clashes of undefeated sides Brazil v Poland in Pool A, and Iran v China in Pool B.
