Russia, Brazil on perfect records at U23 Worlds

 

Brazil celebrate their second straight-set win in as many matches at the 2017 FIVB Men's U23 World Championship in Cairo.

Cairo, Egypt, August 19, 2017 - Russia and Brazil continued on their winning ways here Saturday on Day 2 of the 2017 FIVB Men's U23 World Championship and lead the standings in each of the two pools as the only teams on perefect records, while Argentina, the only other undefeated side, trails Russia in Pool B on set ratio.

Russia outclassed Turkey 4-0 (18-16, 15-13, 15-6, 15-13) in Pool B and Brazil edged Poland 4-0 (15-10, 22-20, 22-20, 15-7) in the tightest of matches in Pool A.

In other Pool A action, Japan registered their first win in the competition downing winless Mexico 4-0 (15-12, 15-12, 15-11, 15-10) and Cuba handed hosts Egypt their first defeat 4-2 (13-15, 16-14, 10-15, 15-12, 15-11, 18-16) in a late-night thriller.

In Pool B Argentina are close on Russia's heels after dominating winless Algeria 4-0 (15-11, 15-8, 15-9, 15-12) and Iran shut out China 4-0 (15-13, 15-12, 15-8, 15-13) for their first win in the tournament.



All matches in Cairo are played under a new scoring system currently being tested: a best-of-seven, 15-point set format.





The top two teams of each pool advance to the semifinals.

Competition in Cairo continues on Sunday with the third round of pool play, which amongst others sees Russia take on China and Brazil challenged by the hosts.
